1. Nyepi – Day of Silence, Balinese New Year
Bali annually celebrates Nyepi – the first spring new moon of the year. This is the time when the entire island comes to a standstill for one day: airports are closed, traffic on the streets stops, and locals devote time to meditation and introspection. Silence on this day is needed to deceive evil spirits who, having come to Bali from the sea, will not see a single living soul and, disappointed, will leave the island forever.
2. Kecak – traditional dance
This is one of the most famous masterpieces of Balinese art, telling the ancient epic Ramayana. This dance, or rather the whole performance, is performed by a large group of men. Instead of the traditional orchestra that accompanies other Balinese performances, the rhythm of kecak is created by the performers themselves; the men, who represent an army of monkeys, rhythmically shout “cak-cak-cak”.

 


3. Batik – the art of painting on fabric
The technique of dyeing fabric with wax, known as batik, is part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage. Many regions, such as Java, create their own unique patterns.
